Wild Portrait Session
Gabriola Island, B.C
Updated headshots without the studio backdrop
Tony needed a fresh set of headshots, but there was no reason they had to look like conventional corporate portraits.
A Wild Portrait session gave us the opportunity to create updated photographs that still served the practical purpose of a professional headshot while feeling more relaxed, natural and personal.
Instead of separating Tony from his environment, the location became part of the photographs—giving the final collection more character and variety than a single studio setup could provide.
The Approach
The goal was to create a useful set of updated portraits while keeping the session easygoing and adaptable.
Rather than repeating one pose against one background, we worked through a mix of compositions and expressions that could serve different purposes.
The session focused on:
Clean, approachable headshots
Relaxed environmental portraits
Natural expressions
A mix of tighter and wider compositions
Vertical and horizontal framing
Variety for different online and professional uses
Simple direction without making the photographs feel overly posed
The outdoor setting also gave us opportunities to change the look of the photographs simply by moving through the environment rather than rebuilding a lighting setup or changing backdrops.
Built Around the Person
A headshot still needs to be useful.
But useful does not have to mean generic.
The session was designed to give Tony photographs that looked polished enough for professional use while still feeling recognizably like him.
That balance is a big part of the Wild Portrait approach. The location, light and composition support the person rather than overwhelming them, and the direction is there to help—not to force someone into a pose or personality that does not feel natural.
The final collection included a mix of:
Professional headshots
Environmental portraits
Relaxed expressions
More formal options
Casual alternatives
Different crops for online profiles and other uses
The Result
Tony left with more than one updated profile picture.
The session produced a flexible collection of portraits he could draw from depending on where and how the photographs were being used.
Some images are clean and straightforward. Others have more environment and personality.
Together, they show that a professional portrait can still feel relaxed, personal and real.
That is exactly where Wild Portraits fits for people who need updated photographs but do not necessarily want the traditional studio-headshot experience.
