Competitive cycling, community and race-day storytelling

Cycling events are about more than the competition itself. They bring together athletes, organizers, volunteers, families and local cycling communities—all contributing to the energy and character of the day.

For this project, I worked with Cycling BC to document the action and atmosphere surrounding a BMX event hosted in partnership with BC BMX and Nanaimo BMX.

The goal was to create a versatile collection of photographs that captured both the intensity of competition and the broader experience of attending the event. That meant looking beyond traditional race coverage to include the people, details and unscripted moments that help tell a more complete story.

The Approach

The photography combined:

  • Fast-paced race action

  • Athlete portraits and candid moments

  • Event atmosphere

  • Organizers and volunteers at work

  • Spectator engagement

  • Venue and environmental context

  • Details that communicate the character of BMX culture

By moving between the course and the surrounding event, I was able to create a balanced collection that showed not only what happened, but what it felt like to be there.

Built for Real Marketing Use

The finished photographs provided Cycling BC and its event partners with imagery suitable for:

  • Social media

  • Newsletters

  • Event promotion

  • Community storytelling

  • Athlete recognition

  • Future cycling initiatives

  • Organizational communications

A public gallery made the event accessible to the wider cycling community, while an additional private collection provided Cycling BC and the event hosts with a broader range of images for their own communications.

The Result

The final gallery tells a complete race-day story: the speed and focus of the athletes, the work taking place behind the scenes, and the community that supports competitive cycling across British Columbia.

This is the kind of commercial event coverage I aim to create—photography that documents the occasion while also giving organizations a purposeful and reusable visual library.

Planning an event, campaign or community initiative?

I create purposeful photography for organizations that need more than simple documentation. Together, we can build a collection that captures the experience, represents the people involved and supports your future communications.
